I love Strax .. I wish someone in the BBC would come up with the idea of a spin off series for him, Vastra and Jenny - it would be brilliant. He's a perfect mixture of comedy and malevolence, wonderfully portrayed and I love his interaction with Vastra and the Doctor. It does bother me slightly though that Strax has been 'altered' to be the way that he is and not at all the way that is normal for his species but then - I suppose that the Sontarun are genetically altered beings anyway.

I am still not entirely sure where he came from... he was just suddenly there in an episode, unless I'm sorely missing something!

He was a Sontarun who had for some undisclosed reason brought disgrace upon his clone batch, and therefore was forced to become a nurse to serve the weak and the dying. The implication was that it was the Doctor who had commanded this.

Strax's entry does feel rather random, though I do enjoy him. I do however feel that the producers have overestimated just how popular he, Vastra and Jenny would be since they were in three or four episodes in close succession.

Oooh I would say the opposite - I'd say that they underestimated it. I love the trio ... they'd be great in their own show. Though I don't quite get what all that was about with Strax dying in A Good Man Goes To War and then suddenly being alive again in the Christmas special. If the Doctor can do that for him, why can't he do it for everyone?
