I was seriously disappointed when I heard that one year Tennant was not going to be doing an entire series but that there would instead be a few - four was it? - specials, at distant intervals and each longer than a normal episode. I still wish that that hadn't happened but actually some of the specials were really pretty good. I think that my favourite was probably 'the Waters of Mars' which managed to be both creepy and atmoshperic. It showed a new side to the Doctor too - a ruthless and not entirely likeable side where he seemed to let narcissism get the better of him and considered that he was not bound by the ordinary rules of space and time. I don't want to give away too many spoilers but I was relieved to see that Captain Adelaide brought him down to earth in that respect.

It's strange, though, that after that episode, a major theme of Matt Smith's stuff has been "time can be rewritten". I don't know, it's kind of contradictory.

Yes. I realise that there has to be a certain suspension of disbelief with a program that deals with time travel but nonetheless it did start to overrule its own boundaries at one point, if that makes any sense. The Doctor is lucky that he did not disappear in a puff of logic . Remember the Ecclestone episode where Rose saved her dad and all those weird flying things came to sterilise the earth because time had been damaged? They seemed to forget about that in the later series's.

What about that weird creature that was clinging to Donna's back --it was supposed to be feeding off some time discrepancies.

I never felt sure that I entirely 'got' that one

I thought that one was just a too drawn out "What would happen if..." episode, with no real content of its own to bring.
