I am rather bad at remembering which season corresponds to which episodes, but I know that there was one MS season that was by and large completely awful. It was the one which started with the episode with the people trapped in the wifi .. and it went on from there. The whole 'who is CLara' thing was both boring and frustrating - did anyone even care? - and the writers seemed to sacrifice a whole lot of plot for the sake of that running meme. Maybe Smith did well to bail out when he did because the quality of the writing, with the odd exception, really had taken a dive.

That is one thing that annoys me; the need to have the long story arcs. Ignoring the fact that in the old days they used to run stories over multiple episodes as the norm, they didn't feel the need to put in cross-references all over. If you miss certain bits, it starts to feel like you're missing things all the time.
When they kept going on about Bad Wolf all the way through Christopher Ecclestone's series, I just kept wishing they'd shut up about it as it was a constant and largely irrelevant distraction from what was going on.

I kindof liked the mystery of Bad Wolf, but the reality of it sort of fizzled out.
